Pledge (Witches of Coventry House Book 1) by Christina Garner

Kindle Edition, 257 pages
Expected publication: January 12th 2017
Three new witches. Two dangerous secrets. One demon on the prowl.

Haunted by her past, Eden sees college as her chance at a fresh start. With a new school, new friends, and the recent discovery she's a witch, life should be getting easier, right?

Except she's tormented by nightmares and lighting fires in her sleep.

When things turn deadly, it looks like the monster stalking Eden's dreams might just be real after all. Will she face the truth in time, or will her sisters pay with their lives?

Pledge is the first book in The Witches of Coventry House, the exciting New Adult Urban Fantasy series from the bestselling author of The Gateway Trilogy.

My Thoughts…

Pledge is an interesting witch book.   I am an huge paranormal fan but have not read a lot about witches.     This was intriguing due to the premise that the girls who are pledging to join the Coventry House in college do not know they have any special talents.    They are put through various tests before they are allowed to pledge.

Eden is the main character.    She grew up with a horrible history that still haunts her and powers that she has no clue about.    I liked that even with her rough past she was friendly, helpful, and happy with life.    She came to college to get an education but also to make friends and start her life over without her past getting in the way.     Her reactions to the events happening in the college world are real.   When the boy she likes no longer seems interested it hurts.    When her friends are in trouble she steps up and helps them.     Eden is a very likable character.

The secondary characters are all interesting.  As the story continued I was able to learn more about their history and why they were pledging the Coventry House.  Knowing the history of the characters make them more real and a better understanding of where the story could be heading.
I feel like this is a good set up for the rest of the series.  Witches of Coventry House is a series that I am excited to read more of.     Christina Garner is a new author to me but one that I will be looking for more from.

Staying For Good (Most Likely To #2) by Catherine Bybee

Kindle Edition
Expected publication: January 24th 2017 by Montlake Romance
Zoe Brown may have been voted Most Likely to Never Leave River Bend, but the paper-thin walls and suffocating air of her family’s double-wide trailer were not what she wanted for her life. Other than BFFs Melanie and Jo, the only thing that kept Zoe sane during high school was her boyfriend, Luke.

She didn’t just leave, she escaped—turning her back on the shame of her black-sheep siblings and imprisoned dad. Now a celebrity chef in Dallas, she can afford all the things she never could have growing up. But when she returns to rustic, ruggedly beautiful River Bend, Zoe has to face all that she abandoned—including Luke.

While Luke was a refuge for Zoe in the past, he knows they inhabit totally different worlds now. Anchored by his parents and his job as a mechanic in his father’s shop, Luke never felt the urge to leave River Bend—until Zoe’s return.

But when the two rekindle their old flame, Zoe is forced to make the hardest decision of her life: remain in River Bend and confront her past before it destroys her, or say good-bye to everyone she’s ever loved…again, this time for good.

My Thoughts…

A small hobunk town where everyone knows everyone’s business and your business isn’t all good, of course you want to escape and leave it all behind.   That is exactly what Zoe wanted/needed to do.   She had to escape, she had to put it all behind, even if that means the love of her life.

I love Zoe.    She has spunk, respect, and love.   She takes what could be a dead end life with an abusive dad who is in jail and a mom who can’t get over him and escapes into a life of excitement, fulfillment, and loving what she does.     The only hold up is that she can’t find love.     I love when someone is so in love with someone that they can’t move past.    They try, they have short meaningless relationships trying to find that happen ending they want, yet they can’t do it.     They can’t give themselves to anyone other than the man who is meant to be theirs.

Catherine Bybee did it again with Staying for Good.     She wrote a book I could not put down with characters that I could not help caring about.      I was invested in the story, the characters, and the outcome.      I certainly recommend picking up your own copy.

On Second Thought by Kristan Higgins

Paperback, 480 pages
Expected publication: January 31st 2017 by HQN Books
Following in the footsteps of her critically acclaimed novel If You Only Knew , multi-bestselling author Kristan Higgins returns with a pitch-perfect look at the affection—and the acrimony—that binds sisters together

Ainsley O'Leary is so ready to get married—she's even found the engagement ring her boyfriend has stashed away. What she doesn't anticipate is for Eric to blindside her with a tactless breakup he chronicles in a blog…which (of course) goes viral. Devastated and humiliated, Ainsley turns to her half sister, Kate, who's already struggling after the sudden loss of her new husband.

Kate has always been so poised, so self-assured, but Nathan's death shatters everything she thought she knew—including her husband—and sometimes the people who step up aren't the ones you expect. With seven years and a murky blended-family dynamic between them, Ainsley and Kate have never been overly close, but their shared sorrow dovetails their faltering worlds into one.

Despite the lifetime of history between them, the sisters must learn to put their differences aside and open their hearts to the inevitable imperfection of family—and the possibility of one day finding love again.

My Thoughts…

It’s official… I am a Kristin Higgins fan.     She is now a must read author for me.     I loved everything about this book.   I started it in the early afternoon and stayed up half the night having to read it.    Even when I woke up I was still thinking about the story and the characters.   Her first book, If You Only Knew, blew me away.    Now she follows it up with another amazing standalone of On Second Thought.

The family dynamics and the friendships stick out to me.     The relationships, the friendships are so real.    They are not easy, fun, and no worry relationships.   They are tough, flawed, and need work to make them be successful.      There are families, friends, lovers, husbands, and in-laws to be dealt with.    Even the characters that you didn’t really like you understood and appreciate the impact that they made on the others in this story.

If you are looking for a emotional, sometimes humorous story I recommend getting your own copy of On Second Thought.      It has everything I love.    Romance, friendships, and family.

Rescued by Love by Melissa Foster & GIVEAWAY

NEW RELEASE….
The Ryders are a series of stand-alone romances that may also be enjoyed as part of the larger Love in Bloom series. These hot contemporary romance novels feature alpha male heroes and sexy, empowered women. They're flawed, funny, passionate, and relatable to readers who enjoy passionate contemporary romance and women's fiction.

In RESCUED BY LOVE...
As the daughter of a world-renowned fashion designer, Addison Dahl enjoyed a privileged life attending the most sought after parties, traveling around the world, and having anything she wanted. Until she broke free and went against her father's wishes, needing to prove to herself--and to him--that she could make it on her own. Now she's ready to take her adventures in a new direction and sets her sights on roughing it in the wilderness.

Jake Ryder followed in his father's footsteps as a top search and rescue professional. He spends his days saving those in need and his nights in the arms of willing women who offer nothing more than a few hours of sexual enjoyment. Just the way he likes it.

When Jake's sister-in-law calls, concerned because she's been unable to reach her best friend, it's up to Jake to find her and bring her home. But Addison isn't lost, and she sure as hell isn't going to be told what to do by an ornery mountain man with whom she'd spent one torrid weekend after her best friend's wedding. Jake has never left anyone behind--will Addison be his first failed rescue?

**CONTENT WARNING: Due to mature content, recommended for readers aged 18+**

My Thoughts…

Addison and Jake are one night stand pros, no feelings involved, no worries about the next day.   That is until they hook up together.   After circling each other with innuendos for months it finally happens and it is more than they ever expect.   The “rules” are broken and everything changes for them.

I am not big on one night stands but it seems to work for them.  I enjoyed the circling of these two and it was impossible not to feel the sparks between the two of them well before they hooked up.     The heat and attraction was amazing, maybe one of the hottest that Melissa Foster has ever written.

Once again, the family and friendships are amazing.   They are still my favorite parts of the Love in Bloom series.     They are real and true.    They support, love, and accept each other without question.

Good Night, Baby Animals You've Had a Busy Day: A Treasury of Six Original Stories by Karen B. Winnick , Laura Watkins (Illustrations)

Hardcover, 64 pages
Expected publication: January 24th 2017 by Henry Holt and Co. (BYR)

Whether they're dashing, splashing, munching, or crunching, baby animals are ever-exploring! At home in their natural habitats, baby animals learn about the world that surrounds them. When the fun is done, it's time for baby animals to go to sleep. After all, every baby animal has to rest.

Full of action, sound effects, and patterned text, each story features the adorable antics and accurate behavior of six wild animal babies: tiger, elephant, giraffe, rhinoceros, panda, and gorilla. This 64-page, beautifully designed story book is perfect for bedtime.

My Thoughts…

I read this book to my 1 year old nephew and he ooo’d and augh’d over the bright pictures that were not so busy that he could not find the animals we were reading about.      He loved the babies and the mommies.   The story was short enough to keep his attention while long enough for this auntie to get her cuddles.

The stories were realistic in the way animals acted but not scary.    The babies acted like babies and the mommies were loving and protecting them.     This is a collection of stories with each animal getting their own and I found out the panda bear is definitely my nephews favorite.

I look forward to re-reading this weekly with  him knowing that someday he will not want to sit on my lap and have me read to him.

Island Thyme Café by Andrea Hurst

Kindle Edition, 231 pages
Published November 25th 2016
ASIN: B01N0JN9QU; December 2016; Amazon Digital
Romance/Women’s Fiction; $4.99 E-book/Paperback $14.99

Her Dark Past Eclipsed her Future…Until New Love Brought Endless Possibilities

When her estranged daughter visits Madrona Island for the summer, Jude Simon, owner of the popular Island Thyme Café, is forced to face the dark secrets from her past. Years ago, she found out about her husband’s infidelity from an article in the local paper. Left a single mother of an infant daughter, Jude went on to make a success of her café, but still hides a broken heart behind her radiant smile.

Now, Jude finds herself falling hard for her new chef, Ryan Folger. Her feelings are returned, and Jude is finally able to envision her own happily ever after. However, when the cast and crew of an upcoming movie come to town to film Murder Most Magic, Ryan’s own dark secrets return in the form of a seductive ex-lover determined to have him back.

With the help of her friends, Kyla and Lily, Jude decides to fight for her chance at love with Ryan, work to repair the broken relationship with her daughter, and find the happiness she always longed for.

My Thoughts…

Island Thyme Café is the 3rd book in this series.    While each book can be read as a standalone story they are definitely better read in order.    Each story tells the tale of a different character living on Madrona Island.   There is a beginning and an e nding for each character with a lot of fun in between.

This is the story of Jude and Ryan.   Jude owns a café and Ryan is her extremely talented chef.  They have a relationship, of course there are hiccups, and they must work through these hiccups to find their happy ever after.   I enjoyed seeing them circle each other and denying their true feelings while keeping their hearts open to loving each other.
While this is Jude and Ryan’s story, the rest of the characters are just as enjoyable.    I always like catching up with characters from past stories.   It is nice to see how their lives have progressed and where they are heading.      The love and respect everyone in the town has for each other is amazing.   It is the truth to living in a small town where everyone knows everyone.

I recommend checking out this series.

Check out my thoughts on the first book in this series… The Guestbook

Paperback, 336 pages
Published July 26th 2012 by CreateSpace

Lily Parkins finds out her hubby is cheating on her.  She decided enough is enough and moved to the Pacific Northwest.  Lily’s grandmother has left her the old family farmhouse which happens to be the only place she has ever been truly happy.  Lily knows she has decisions to make.  Is the farm, which her grandma convert to a Bed & Breakfast where she wants to stay?  Should she return to her husband, forgiving his cheating and overbearing ways?  Should she open her heart to new love?

Lily’s grandma left her the guestbook from all the years running the Bed & Breakfast.  Inside this book is letters, recipes, and parts of Lily’s history.  All of the information helps Lily get her independence and remake herself.  Between her wonderful new friends, her mother, and Ian, the handsome neighbor, Lily is determined to be successful and happy.

When the email arrived asking me to read The Guestbook telling me it was like Nicholas Sparks, Nora Roberts, and Debbie Macomber wrapped in one I was thrilled by wary.  Those are big names to live up to.  But she was right on.  I saw the romance, the charm, and the heart just as promised.

The Guestbook is a story of friendship, love, family, and finding one self.  The friendships Lily made let her trust again.  I loved the small town feel of everyone knowing everyone and helping without being asked or being paid.  If more towns were like this the world would be a much better, much happier place.  The love that not only Lily found but also that was hinted at foe her best friends Jude and Kyla, made me unable to put the book down.  It is a love story, not a story of sex and lust, although there was some of that in there also.  Family…Lily realizing what she lost by staying with her loser husband.  I loved how she worked through the time she didn’t and should have spent with her grandma.  How she pushed her mom away, but when she needed her mom, she was there.  All of these helped Lily redefine herself and find true happiness.

I cannot believe this is Andrea Hurst’s debut novel.  The next one cannot come soon enough.  The Guestbook is perfect to cuddle up with a glass of cocoa next to a roaring fire and lose yourself in

Tangle of Strings (Sweeney Sisters #4) by Ashley Farley

Kindle Edition
Expected publication: January 18th 2017
A nearly tragic accident leads to a discovery that rocks the Sweeney family’s world

Some families never resolve conflicts. Not so with the Sweeneys. Their sense of family, their love for one another, and their willingness to forgive have always triumphed and brought them back together. Until now. The latest crisis threatens to tear the family apart and crumble the foundation that has always proved itself rock solid.

At the heart of the matter are sixteen-year-old Annie Bethune and her boyfriend, Cooper. At stake are their dreams for the future. As to these dreams, no one in the family holds back when asserting an opinion.

Annie soon begins to feel like a puppet on strings with all those she loves telling her what to do. When those strings become tangled and a family feud develops, Annie, unable to bear the pressure, runs away. Straight into the arms of danger.

My Thoughts…

I am loving the Sweeney Family.   They are sweet, feisty, and so protective of each other.    Even when they don’t see eye to eye they have each other’s backs.     They can fight each other but will be the first to defend each other to non-family members.

This is the story of Annie, the high schooler that has been adopted into the Sweeney family.      The story of Annie and Cooper is the story of choices, future, and family.       They have to make decisions that will affect their futures with a lot of pressure from the rest of the family.   While the family drives me crazy with the pressure they put on the teenagers to make the decisions that the adults want, I understand that they want what is best for Cooper and Annie.     I liked that Annie was able to stand up for herself and say NO!   This is not what I want without alienating the family.     Of course, there are twists and turns within the storyline that all add to the story.

There is nothing to change in this series or this family.   The characters are real, the setting is amazing, and the storyline is wonderful.   Ashley Farley has an amazing series that I cannot wait to learn more about.

Excerpt:

“Wake up.” Stephanie felt a gentle touch on her shoulder, so soft she thought she imagined it. She could feel a small protest bubble from her chest. “Wake up! He’s coming.” This time she could feel someone grasp her shoulders and give a shake. Stephanie jolted from sleep, pushing herself up to a sitting position.  She pushed her back against the wall, brought her knees up to her chest, and wrapped her arms tightly around them. She couldn’t shake the disturbing dream. It had felt so real. The woman’s voice still floated around in her thoughts as she searched for her. She could still feel her hands on her shoulders. She reached up and placed her hands over the lingering sensation and sought comfort in the fact for the first moment since she arrived she didn’t feel so alone in this hell.
The sound of the lock sliding in the door made Stephanie’s heart race, she could feel her pulse in her throat as she lay down and pretended to be asleep. She concentrated on slowing her breath to deep, even intervals, trying to block out the sound of his footsteps across the floor.
His wedding band clinked against the bars but he remained quiet, watching her. “I know you’re awake, Rose,” he said after a stretch of time. The drugs in her system were wreaking havoc on her thoughts. She wasn’t sure how long had passed or if she had fallen asleep and this was another dream. She desperately wanted it to be a dream. She didn’t want to look at his face anymore and wonder if today would be the day he decided to kill her.
Stephanie opened her eyes and looked at him. He was dressed in a suit with his tie loosened and hanging haphazardly around his neck, his haunting eyes never leaving her. His clothes looked expensive and she couldn’t’ help but wonder who he was when he left here. She wondered what woman would be married to a man like him and if she feared him like Stephanie did.
“There you are.” He smiled at her, an expression that seemed unnatural for his face. “You need to eat, Rose.” He pointed to a tray of food she hadn’t touched. The wonderful smells had called to her but she couldn’t take any more drugs. She didn’t know what was real or not anymore.
“No more drugs…they make me feel so sick,” Stephanie whispered. She could feel the physical toll weighing heavily on her exhausted body.
“As long as you behave I don’t need to drug you.” He unlocked the cell door and then picked up the tray. Walking inside, he approached her bed and sat down, placing the tray on the edge. “Do you promise to behave?”
Stephanie nodded her head and tried not to tremble. She didn’t want to show fear but it poured out of her regardless.
He placed a hand on her arm and then ran it over the length of her body. “Good girl,” he said. “Good girl.” Stephanie squeezed her eyes shut and held her breath until she felt the weight of his body leave the bed and the sound of the cell door closing behind him.
